How U.S. Bank's HELOC works
The draw period is 10 years. During the draw, the minimum payment is 1% or 2% of the balance, or interest only if you qualify. After that you repay principal and interest until the line matures; the repayment length is not published on the pages we read.
The fixed-rate option lets you lock some or all of your balance for up to 20 years, with up to 3 fixed-rate locks active at once. On a primary residence, money is available after the 3-business-day waiting period.
U.S. Bank HELOC requirements
- Credit score: 660 minimum; the lowest rate assumes 730 or higher.
- Combined loan-to-value: not published; the lowest rate assumes 60%.
- Property: rules beyond the primary residence are not published.
U.S. Bank HELOC fees and closing costs
U.S. Bank charges no application fee, and its page says the customer pays no closing costs (initial escrow-related funding costs may apply). There is a $75 annual fee after the first year, waived with a Platinum Checking Package.
If you close the line within 30 months, the early closure fee is 1% of the original line, up to $500. Worked example (our arithmetic): closing a $30,000 line early costs $300, and any line of $50,000 or more hits the $500 cap.
